The Young brothers of Clinton, Iowa, owned the Great Western Copper Company, and are the ones who dedicated the land for the town of Courtland. The town is named after one of the Young brothers, Courtland Young.

James Herron was a businessman, and very active in the Courtland community, including donating land for the school. He had a little "problem" with the cattle business though, and spent 50 years as a fugitive....
